Summary:
I'm pretty sure that almost everyone knows what happens in Sailor Moon. The live action is pretty much the same story, but there is a lot more to do with Endymion's knights. (which made me SOOOOO happy~)
So basically, Tsukino Usagi finds out that she is actually a warrior called Sailor Moon and she has to fight against the evil forces of Queen Beryl alongside the other Sailor Senshi. That is the first half. The second half is QUITE different from the original story. Beryl brainwashes Endymion and Sailor Mercury, while they Silver Imperial Crystal has taken over Sailor Moon and has pretty much made her go berserk and badass on the bad guys.
So...I gave this 4 out of 5. That is mostly for the nostalgia of this drama. Other than that, it's pretty bad. Think of it as the manga of Sailor Moon and Power Rangers had a kid; that would be this! The fighting style and the monsters are just like Power Rangers, but the Power Rangers are in mini-skirts! I'm not saying Power Ranges is bad; I LOVED the original when it came out! But since this was made in 2003, it could have been better quality. And Sailor Luna........You'll just have to watch to discover this unique character.
The quality aside, the acting in this was actually not half bad! The characters had great development. The designs of the characters were good. And the story was just really good! It goes into so many more little details that the manga/anime only lightly touched upon. This arc is my favorite because it has the most history of the Moon and Earth Kingdoms in it, while the others were all about the present or the future. Endymion's Knights are probable my favorite group that never really got enough attention.
There are actually two additional episodes that cover the origins of Sailor V and Tuxedo Mask, which you also get the
I don't know just how much you're willing to sit through for a little childhood trip, and yes 49 episodes is A LOT of episodes, but if you can stand the corny this a great show to watch.
Characters:
Sawai Miyuu as Tsukino Usagi / Sailor Moon / Princess Serenity
Hama Chisaki as Mizuno Ami / Sailor Mercury
Kitagawa Keiko as Hino Rei / Sailor Mars
Azama Myuu as Kino Makoto / Sailor Jupiter
Komatsu Ayaka as Aino Minako / Sailor V / Sailor Venus
Shibue Joji as Chiba Mamoru / Tuxedo Mask/ Prince Endymion
Tsukino Usagi is a high school girl who becomes Sailor Moon. She is clumsy and not very good in school.
Unlike in the original, Usagi is a little more serious and mature in the drama. She's also less of a crybaby, which was kind of her trademark. I was really glad to see Usago more mature, it made her much more relatable, but she is still the same klutz she's always been. In the second half there is so much growth in her character as reality crashes hard down on her.
Sawai Miyuu plays Usagi. I thought she did a good job as Usagi, she looked the part and was cute a bubbly. She hasn't done much else, but she reminds me of Inoue Mao in her acting style.
Chiba Mamoru is a college student or a high school student, (I don't think they ever said) who is helps out Sailor Moon as Tuxedo Mask.
I found Mamoru to be pretty spot on to the original, and I'm totally fine with that, I've always liked Mamoru's character. He's a little cold, but very sensitive. The whole thing with his reasons for looking the princess and the Silver Crystal are very complicated and deep.
I loved Shibue Joji's performance in this. He's a really good actor and was able to really pull off all the emotions in the show. I've seen him in a few other things and he only gets better.
Kino Motoko and Hino Rei and two of Usagi's friends and Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Mars.
Makoto was always my favorite Sailor Senshi and she didn't disappoint. I was happy to see that her strength was still there even though it was a live action, where it's hard to find female actors that can play a role like this. She's not quite as emotional in this and I kind of miss her boy-chasing antics. Rei was awesome in this. I was never a real big fan of her in the original, because her and Usagi were always fighting. But in this she's more mellowed out.
Mokoto is played by Azuma Myuu, she was a model before acting in this, and for being her first thing she's really good. Rei is played by Kitagawa Keiko, really the only one to go on a do a lot of things. I absolutely love Keiko! She's one of my favorite actresses. This was also her first thing, and she's only gotten better in each thing. She's so young and cute in this!
The last two senshi, Aino Minako and Mizuno Ami as Sailor Venus and Sailor Mercury. Like the manga Ami is a classmate of Usagi's, but Minako is a popular singer.
I was actually not a big fan of Ami in this, she's smart and all, but a lot more insecure about everything. She was insecure in the manga too, but there is a huge mini-plot in the middle of the series that is all about her not being able to trust anyone. Minako was also changed a bit; she was a lot more mature, actually almost too mature. She took the role of being the main protector to the princess but always acted on her own like she couldn't let the others help her.
Hama Chisaki plays Ami and Komatsu Ayaka plays Minako. I don't really have much to say about Chisaki, Ami was a very quite character so it's hard to say how her acting was. As for Ayaka, she wasn't bad. I think she did a good job portraying Minako.
One of my favorite characters in this was Zoisite. He's so different from the manga, he's very classy and loyal to Endymion. Plus he plays the piano. He's also one of the first characters to figure everything out. There is also Luna...I mentioned her before and if you managed to read through my whole review I might as well paint a picture of her for you. Mainly Luna is a cat plushie that Usagi or one of the others carries around, when she moves she becomes a CG. But the best thing about her, in this she becomes a Sailor Senshi...Yes, a Sailor Senshi. A little girl who transforms and fights along with the other senshi. I'm not sure if this was genius or horrible.
Theme Song:
The theme song is Kirari Sailor Dream by Sae. The song is pretty awesome and super fun. It works really well with the series.
